3/4/05

Hey it's 3/4/5! Yeah, this should go on until 2012. Next year's gonna be 4/5/6 ending with 10/11/12. I know, I know pretty dorky. Well the real reason I am here blogging is that the NSA just released their Operating Systems security analysis. Check out the length of Windows compared to Solaris and OS X. It's almost laughable. Make sure to stay secure! Good luck to all the Windows users. Whahahaha!

Wow. It's been half a year since I've blogged. Oh well, I've been busy with other things recently. My FTP server went down, hence the static pages... Hopefully you will see more here in the future...

Wazzup!?!?! Just got involved in the Personal Telco Project here in Portland. Very excited about that! As well, I am listening to the new Beastie Boys album here. It's pretty fresh and a nice change from the last album. They have reached a new level of heady beats... more electro than analog. Lots o' fun!

I'll be moving across Portland soon. Heading to North Portland baby! I hope to broadcast a decent signal for my neighbors... Still waiting on that wireless router, though! So the server may be down for a couple of days, but I will try to move it to a temporary location.... Time to go relax. See Ya!

Good News!!! Linus Torvalds is moving to Portland, OR! Kick ass! Believe it or not Portland, OR is considered the "Linux Capitol" due to the amazing amount of open source research/work done here.

Not only does Portland have the creator of Linux living here, but is the wireless capitol of the world. Personal Telco Portland has created the largest community-based public wireless network. The city is currently working on making a wireless internet public utility, which helps disseminate technology across class and race. What a great day for Portland, OR. Yeah!!!

OK, I don't want this blog to turn into a rant/rave column, but recently I have been made so angry by corporate hoopla, that I have to write it down. What is up with corporate outsourcing of support? It makes getting support impossible.

Problem:

Support outsourcing kills support quality and responsibility.

Example:

A large Fortune 500/1000 company decides to outsource their product support. Each product section needs their own support, so they each find a company to do this. Each product get its own number (or at least extension) at this support company.

One year later, Fortune 500/1000 finds a better support center or decides to no longer outsource support. Numbers/addresses change, but there are 1,000s of documents (online and off) that need to be updated ... Do they? If they do, it's partial. So what happens to the consumer trying to get support? They usually get a recording that forwards them to some new toll-based number. That number usually ends up being some other company or product, and the consumer is stuck trying to find support for their product.

This practice is so common that it has happened to me both as a consumer and a support technician on multiple occasions. So companies, be responsible for providing support, and make it accessible. Why are consumers paying for your bad infrastructures? Let's improve this economy, not by outsourcing, but by doing things right.

Solution:

Make customer support in-house. If the support people can't get the customer an answer, the whole company is there as a resource!

The first blog entry ever. I haven't even read another blog entry, so I am not really sure how this goes. So I'll pick a topic and rant ...

The Internet is heading in a sad place. Almost every page I visit including major corporate ones have advertisements and popups plastered all over the place. What the fuck!?!?!? It's not like a web page costs a lot of money .. People should realize that their page is a dynamic medium that can be viewed by anyone with an internet connection. It's worth the $50 bucks a month for a cable connection with a personal web server running behind it. I do and love it.

Do you see any popups or advertisements here? Hell no!

What compels people to dirty up their site with a bunch of animated screwball adds? What the is going on with the Internet today? Sure I understand that people need to pay for their site, but do it by offering a service, not a bunch of crap thrown together to trick the audience into clicking through to some porno site.

Here's an official deal with all the bad webmasters out there. I will redesign your site to make you money without all the stupid ass click throughs. Just e-mail me. On that note. Have a good week and don't forget to wear your sunscreen!
